Ask me all about using a number line. We have been using a number line to help us solve story problems. Today, we even got to make up our own story problems for a classmate to solve using the number line. We worked on these together on the SmartBoard. Then we wrote an equation to go along with our problem. It was a little hard at first, but we worked together and helped each other. We are going to continue practicing this skill during our Math Workshop next week.

Ask me all about fancy words in our read aloud books! Each day we come together for a read aloud. This year some of our read aloud books included, The Magic Treehouse series and Mercy Watson. Currently, we are reading, Charlotte's Web. During read aloud we talk about new words that we might not know. We also make predictions of what will happen in the story and make connections to our own life. We are learning so many new words during our read aloud books. During our read aloud today, there was a "miracle" in the barn. We talked about what this word meant. Ask me what the miracle was in the barn!
Here are a couple of the responses we heard from classmates: "A miracle is your dreams coming true." "It's something really good that happens." We learned that a miracle is something amazing or wonderful that happens! It is so exciting to learn new words. When we are reading together, share new and fancy words with me! Ask me about using a number line. Today we arranged numbers in order on a number line. We worked together to make sure all the numbers were in order! We arranged numbers from 1-22. Mrs. Mahar hung up a piece of string and we started with no numbers. Then we each added numbers to the number line until we had all the numbers in order. The whole number line fell down so we all worked as a team to put it back together and put all of the numbers in order again! It was good practice for us. Ask me all about Second Step with Ms. Lutz today. We met a new friend named, Shell. He is a snail puppet. Shell taught us about listening to and following directions. We also learned about "self talk" strategies. Then we did a special activity practicing these strategies. with Ms. Lutz at our tables. She gave us directions and we had to draw different things on our paper. We talked about how important it is to listen and follow directions.
Ask me all about animal coverings! Today we read a story about the different types of coverings animals have. Some have fur, some have scales, some have feathers, some have skin, some have shells and there are even other kinds too! First, we made a chart about the things we know about animal coverings. We knew that fish have scales, birds have feathers and people have skin. Then we made a second chart about the things we wanted to learn. Together we read the story about animal coverings. Tomorrow we are going to add to our chart about the things we learned. We learned a lot of new things today! Check out the story we read today!
Ask me about our Math activity today. We have been making arrangements with colored tiles during Math Workshop. We use 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 tiles to make these arrangements. We have been working with partners and by ourselves. Today, we chose our favorite arrangement to make for a class book. We worked hard and did our best work so that we are proud to put it in a book to share with our classmates. Ask me how many tiles I used in my arrangement!
Ask me about Parent/Community Visitor Day. Parents and people from the community had the opportunity to come and visit our classroom today to see all of the learning we do. We were able to show the visitors our Literacy Stations. Some parents even joined us at our centers. It was fun to show how hard we work and all the things we learn each day.
Ask me what it would be like to live in a snow globe? We read the story, The Snow Globe Family, by Jane O'Connor. It's about a family who lives in a snow globe. Then we made our own snow globes and using our five senses we wrote what we would hear, see, touch, taste and smell in our snow globe. Check out our amazing work in the primary showcase this month!!!
Ask me about the important words we use when writing "How To" books. These words help our reader to understand the steps of what we are teaching. We have been practicing using these words each day. Ask me what these three words are!
Ask me about Reading today. We read a story called, Winter Fun. Then we answered questions about the text. As a class we discussed the things we like to do for fun in the winter. There are so many things we like to do. Some of us like to be outside and some of us like to stay inside and have hot chocolate! During our, "work on writing" center today we wrote about the thing we like to do most in the winter. "I go to the ski place."
