Ask me about Flip the Dolphin! We met him today during Reading Workshop. He taught us about a new reading strategy where we change the sound of the vowel to help us figure out a word. If the word doesn't sound right, flip the sound. We tried words with short vowel and long vowel sounds. The word we thought was the funniest was "baby." Say it with a short a sound...that made us laugh!
Ask me all about making a list in Writing. We are working on our opinion writing unit and have been discussing different ways to share our ideas. Today wrote our problem we see in school and made a list of the ways we can fix the problem. We have also been working on writing a letter and making a sign to share our ideas. There are so many different ways to share our thoughts. Ask me all about our SPARK performances today! We all worked with our color groups to plan and perform a skit that showed postive SPARK behavior at school. We got to perform in front of the whole school! We did a great job and worked hard with our groups! We were proud of our work! Ask me all about our new Math activity, fill the hexagon. We use different shapes to make a hexagon. We take turns rolling a dice and using the shape we land on to fill in the hexagon. Some are easier than others! The shapes we might have to use are a triangle, trapezoid, rhombus and hexagon! Using a hexagon is the easy one! The other shapes are a little tricky. First, we did this activity on the SmartBoard and then we worked on our own. We had fun using shapes. Ask me all about opinion writing. This week we have been focusing on ways to solve problems we see around the school. we have brainstormed ways to fix these problems to make our school even better! We each thought about something we want to fix and have been working hard to find solutions. This week we tried two different ways of sharing our ideas. First, we wrote a letter and then we made a sign. We learned there are different ways to present our ideas. We like trying a new way of writing by making a sign. Next week, we are going to try something else new! Wait to see what it is. Ask me all about the shapes we are learning. Today we talked about triangles. There are triangles all around us. Have you ever noticed them? We looked around our classroom to find triangles. Today we watched a silly video about triangles. There were many things in the video that were triangles. We know that triangles have three sides and three points. Next time we are driving in the car, let's look for triangles!
Click on the link below to watch the triangle video. Ask me all about our special visitor today. Mr. Drapp, our superintendent, came to read us a special story and talk to us about his job. First he read us the story, Finding Spring. It was about a little bear who was trying to find Spring. After he read us this special story, we got to ask questions about what a superintendent does. He makes lots of important decisions and takes care of the schools. He makes sure that teachers have all the things they need. He also decides if we have a snow day or a delay. He gets up at 4:00 in the morning to see what the weather is like and decide if it is safe enough for us to come to school. Today we also learned that Mr. Drapp is the person who calls our house to let us know if we have a snow day or delay. He's the voice we hear first thing in the morning! We learned so much more too. Thank you Mr. Drapp for coming to Kindergarten today. We hope you had as much fun as we did!
Ask me what a super reader is! Today we brainstormed and then made a list of all the things that make someone a super reader! Super readers use their reading strategies, sound out the words, use their best behavior, are respectful of materials and remind others to do the right thing. Then we got right to work in our literacy stations and did all of the things we talked about. It feels good to be a "super reader!"
Ask me all about our Math activities today. We got to spend time with our 6th grade buddies showing them how to do all of the math centers we do in our class. We got to be the teachers! It was fun for us to be their teachers because they usually teach us new things. We also showed them how to use one of our favorite Math apps on the ipad. We had a great afternoon with our buddies.
Ask me all about chefs. Chefs are our "community helper of the week." Chefs have a very important job! They make food. Chefs have special training to learn how to cook. We even learned that some famous people have chefs in their house. Wouldn't that be fun? This week during learning centers we have been doing activities just like chefs. We used an activity on the SmartBoard called, "Make A Cake" where we got to design cakes just like a chef would, we used our kitchen center to "cook up" special food and we worked with Mrs. Mahar to label a chef like their hat, measuring cup, apron, bowl, spoon and table to cook on! We are having fun learning about chefs. |
