Ask me all about our special assembly today. The Forbes Flyers came to perform at GCS today. They are a competitive jump rope team and they do lots of tricks using their jump ropes. It was so much fun to watch them do all kinds of tricks and show us all that they had learned. They have traveled all over the world and performed in many different places. We got a chance to ask questions about all that they do. We learned a very important lesson today from the coach, Mrs. Harrington. One student asked, "how many competitions how you won?" She told us they don't focus on what they have won, but they want to have fun, learn and do their best! This is something Mrs. Mahar tells us all the time. We couldn't believe all of the amazing things they did today. Ask me about my favorite tricks that I saw today. After the performance, we talked about the word "athlete." Do you know what an athlete is? We watched a special video clip about athletes. Click on the link below to watch it with me at home (we didn't watch all of this, so enjoy the rest together).

Ask me about how many fingers there are in our class! Today we worked with a partner to determine how many fingers two people have. Then, we worked as a class to find out how many fingers there are in the classroom. We discovered several patterns in the numbers when we skip counted by 10. Ask me how many fingers or toes there are in our family.
Ask me all about the butterfly lifecycle. Today we read a non-fiction story about a caterpillar changing into a butterfly. We learned some very important words; metamorphosis, larva and chrysalis. Ask me about these words! Mrs. Mahar was very impressed that we knew what some of these words meant. We are very smart!!!!
Ask me about the different parts of a story. We have been talking about the characters, plot, setting, problem and solution. The past couple of days we have been reading the story, Stellaluna. Today we finished the story and discussed all story elements in the book. Ask me to tell you about the characters in the book and where the setting of the book took place! When we are reading at night, ask me to identify the story elements in the books we read together!
Ask me all about Math today. Yesterday we talked about how many noses are in our classroom. There were 13 noses yesterday (12 students and 1 teacher). Today was trickier, we had to figure out how many eyes were in our classroom! Since we each have two eyes, we knew it would be a higher number. We talked with a partner about how we could figure this out. Many of us said we could count by 2s. We counted by 2s and found out there were 26 eyes in our classroom (12 students and 2 teachers). Then we talked about other parts of our body that we have 2 of...hands, feet, elbows, ears, eyebrows, ankles, shoulders, lips, knees, legs and arms.
Tonight we have a special homework assignment... we have to count all the eyes in our house! Ask me all about opinion writing today! We read the story, Hey Little Ant. In the story, the boy wants to squish the ant but the ant is trying to persuade him not to. We talked about what we thought the boy should do. Should he squish the ant or leave it alone? After the story we went back to our seats and began to write about what we thought the boy should do. We came up with many different reasons. Then we came together and shared our ideas. What would you do?
Ask me all about my writing strategies! This week we have been talking about all of the strategies we use to help us with our writing. We thought about all the things we do to help us when we are stuck on a word. We use the word wall, we use our color word wall, we stretch out the word just like stretchy snake, listen for smaller words we know and use the alphabet chart. All of these things help us write! We are such amazing writers.
Ask me all about Math! We have been working on story problems and using all of the strategies we know to help us solve them. We read the problem together and circled the important parts we needed to help us solve the problem. Today we solved a problem about 3 bikes, each one had two wheels and we had to figure out how many wheels there were altogether. We got to use whiteboards and markers to solve the problem on our own. Some of us drew pictures and some of us used an equation to figure it out. The problem seemed really hard at first, but when we talked about it and used our strategies, it wasn't as hard as we thought! We used the document camera to share our work with the class. We loved showing our work on the SmartBoard.
Ask me what a character trait is. They are words used to describe a character. We started to discuss one of our favorite characters, Jack, from the Magic Treehouse. We know that Jack is eight years old, a boy, he carries a notebook and he writes notes in his notebook. We are going to continue our discussion of character traits and learn more about our favorite characters!
Ask me about the special guest we had in our class today! We got to meet Mrs. Sheikh! She spent time with us during Writing and Reading today. We are very excited to have her in our class. Ask me all about our special science program today! We had a scientist come to our classroom. We did experiments and learned all about weather. We learned about warm air and cold air. We made weather maps to learn how we get cold air from the North Pole. We learned about clouds and rain. Did you know that clouds are made of water and dust? We made clouds using hot water and ice. We learned about lightening and then used a special tool to create electricity. Some of us even got shocked by it! It wasn't a big shock, but it felt funny. A couple of students volunteered to use electricity to make their hair stand up on their head. We laughed really hard!!! The last thing we got to try were tornado tubes. We made tornadoes in a bottle. We loved learning all about weather and we had so much fun!!! |
