Ask me all about our Harvest Parade and celebration! We all dressed up and paraded around the school. Then we had a special celebration in our classroom. We had some treats and showed off our costumes. We are very excited for Halloween!

Ask me all about pumpkin math! Today we cut open and carved a class pumpkin. First, we estimated how many seeds would be inside of the pumpkin. We made a class graph with all of our estimates. Then we sorted through all of the pumpkin insides and took out the seeds. We brainstormed the easiest way to count all of the seeds and decided it would be easiest to make groups of ten. We also learned that ten groups of ten makes 100. We worked together to count out groups of ten. After that, we added up all of the seeds and there were 579 seeds in our pumpkin!!! Mrs. Mahar is going to take them home and cook them tonight so we can try them tomorrow. After Math, Mrs. Mahar carved the pumpkin which you can see outside of our classroom! Ask me all about our special guest reader today! Tyler's "nonni," Mrs. Pearce, came to share a special Halloween story with us. She is visiting from Ohio and wanted to visit our classroom to see all that we are learning about. We were so excited to show her all that we do. We love to have guest readers!
Ask me what a "genre" is. We have been learning about two different genres of books, fiction and non-fiction. We have been reading both types of books. We learned that non-fiction books have true information and the pictures are "real." The pictures look like someone took them with a camera. Fiction stories are made up. Some of our favorite books are fiction like; Pete the Cat, The Sandwich Swap, Click, Clack Moo and many others. We are having fun looking for different genres of books in our classroom. We might even have some of these types of books at home!
Ask me all about number talks. We have been doing them during Math time. We have been looking at dot pictures to see how many dots there are. Then we talk about what we see. This is a great learning tool, because not all of us see things the same way. We each have a chance to explain and show our thinking. We are learning from each other and seeing new ways to look at a the dots!
Ask me all about the silly counting book we read today, Counting Monkeys. It was such a funny story and we did a lot of counting. Each page added a new number. Every character in the story was scaring away the monkeys, so we had to do some silly things to help find the monkeys while we were counting. At the end of the story, we found the monkeys and counted all of them. There were 40 monkeys in the book! We have been counting every day and all of our practiced helped us count today!
Ask me all about the spooky word "the." Today during morning work we had to search for this word in a haunted house. We "buttered" the word when we found it. The word was hiding in windows, on bat's wings and even on ghosts (they were friendly). We have been practicing this word and other sight words each day. It is helping us with our writing too!
Ask me about our new Math activity, "Roll and Build." We got to try it today for the first time. Each player gets a number board, then you roll the two dice and build the number with connecting cubes. The first person to fill their board wins!
Ask me all about Writer's Workshop. We have been working so hard on our writing, stretching out words and adding details. Our favorite part is sharing our hard work at the end of writer's workshop. We love to see what our friends are writing about too and all of the details they are adding! We learn from one another.
Ask me all about asking questions while reading. Asking questions helps us learn about the text, characters and the setting of the story. Today we began reading the book, The Sandwich Swap. In this story two friends get into a fight over two different kinds of sandwiches. We asked many questions about this story before we started reading like, "who will this story be about?" "why is this story called the sandwich swap?" and "what kind of sandwiches are in the story?" We got some of the answers while reading, but we can't wait to see what happens tomorrow when we read the rest! We also asked questions about the author's choice of words and illustrations. We are looking deeper into our stories!
